Why I Became A Financial Advisor

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. While we may start off in one career, our experiences might show us other areas we want to pursue or open doors to new opportunities. That’s exactly how I found my way into a career as a financial advisor.

First Steps

After graduating from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance, I dove right into a financial management career and had the privilege to work for Fortune 500 companies, including Exxon and Dell. I spent over 20 years working in the oil, gas, and technology fields doing everything from managing assets and launching products to designing and implementing financial systems. During this time, I also earned my MBA in international finance from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School.

At the end of my 10 years with Dell, where I worked as a senior principal consultant and product manager, the Great Recession hit. Like many others, I got laid off and decided to take my financial knowledge and experience and pivot a bit, turning my focus to helping individuals achieve their financial dreams. I launched out on my own, obtaining the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) credential and setting up my financial planning business. In 2010, Hamilton Financial Planning was born and the rest is history.

My Role Today

Now, with 35 years of financial experience under my belt, I spend my days doing what I love: getting to know my clients so I can help them create a comprehensive wealth management plan that gets them closer to financial freedom. Throughout my career, I have designed more than 250 financial plans, providing my clients with the tools and insight they need to pursue their financial goals with confidence.

The best part of my job is the clients I get to work with. I’m honored that they trust me with such an important part of their lives, and there’s nothing more fulfilling than helping a client secure their retirement and legacy and efficiently pass their assets down to family or charities they care about. I thoroughly enjoy taking the financial burden off of people’s backs so they can focus on what they love.

My motivation for what I do is simple: to do well by doing good. Making a difference in someone’s life and growing a legacy business for my kids gets me out of bed every morning excited for the work ahead.
